History

We are all immigrants. My great grandfather came from Switzerland to New Orleans. My father went in a covered wagon from the swamps of Arkansas to Kansas.  Forty years ago I came kicking and screaming as an immigrant from Oklahoma to Texas. I didn’t want to move, but in time living in Texas has turned into a blessing, and I have enjoyed the richness of many ethnic celebrations and languages of Texas. One of them is the German community where today in many areas people get together to speak their native language. Reading about the rich German culture brought to Texas in History from The Reluctant Immigrant helped make the book historically correct, and details such as the purses women carried and what men wore on their heads make the book alive.

Texas history is fun! It’s everywhere you look and listen. It’s on building names, road signs, park titles and sitting right next to you. I enjoy the rich cultural heritage of Texas as I picture in my head the immigrants coming from all over the world to the United States and consider the issues they faced.

All History is fun and it’s important!  It’s a link to the past and a clue to understanding the present. And it’s everywhere from a name on a school to a statue or a plastic gizmo in your kitchen window. Even the picture in the principal’s office or the office of the CEO of your company represents an exciting story of history. We can learn from history, but we can also enjoy the treasure hunt that is history.
